'In freudiger Begeisterung uber die Schonheit des Feuerscheins (...) trug er [=Nero] in seinem ublichen Theaterkostum eine Gesangsszene uber die Eroberung Trojas vor.' So beschreibt der Biograph Sueton eine Situation, die sich wahrend des verheerenden Brand Roms im Jahr 64 n.Chr. zugetragen haben soll.Das Bild des singenden Kaisers Nero uber den Dachern des brennenden Roms ist auch in der Moderne noch weit verbreitet. Der Grund dafur durfte insbesondere in der Verfilmung des Romans 'Quo Vadis' von Henryk Sienkiewiczs liegen, der seit seiner Erstausstrahlung im Jahr 1954 als Klassiker gilt und sich der oben genannten Sichtweise bedient. Dabei basiert die Vorstellung, Nero habe die Stadt nicht nur tatenlos zusehend niederbrennen lassen, sondern auch selbst den Befehl fur den Brand gegeben, auf reinen Vermutungen. Doch nicht nur der Zusammenhang Neros mit dem Brand Roms, sondern auch andere Uberlieferungen aus seinem Leben, bildeten in der Moderne immer wieder die Grundlage dafur, sich mit seiner Person zu beschaftigen. Fur Geschichtswissenschaftler stellt sich in diesem Zusammenhang die Frage, inwieweit diese Auseinandersetzungen mit Nero, den historischen Tatsachen gerecht werden und in welcher Art sie das Bild Neros in der Moderne beeinflussen. Findet bei diesen Darstellungen des romischen Kaisers unter zur Hilfenahme der vorhandenen uberlieferten Quellen eine ausreichende Reflexion statt? Oder wird den Rezipienten ein womoglich vollkommen falsches Bild vermittelt?Die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Arbeit liegt darin, diese Fragen im Hinblick auf ein einzelnes Werk zu beantworten. Als Grundlage dafur dient der Roman 'Der falsche Nero' von Lion Feuchtwanger. In diesem fiktiven Werk wird das Leben des Princeps nicht publikumswirksam nacherzahlt, sondern es werden dessen charakterlichen Zuge detailliert beschrieben, wodurch eine recht deutliche Einordnung des damaligen Nero-Bildes moglich wird.Der Aufbau der Arbeit ist thematisch angelegt. Zu Beginn steht eine kurze Vorstellung der entscheidenden Personen Nero und Lion Feuchtwanger. Das darauf folgende Kapitel beschaftigt sich mit dem Roman 'Der falsche Nero' selbst. In den Unterpunkten des Kapitels wird eine kurze Inhaltsangabe gegeben und die Intention des Romans behandelt.Schliesslich wird im letzten Kapitel betrachtet, welches Bild der Roman von Nero entwirft, wobei hier insbesondere die ausserliche und charakterliche Beschreibung Neros und die Darstellung seines Ansehens im Osten berucksichtigt wurde
