Sir Walter Scott ist ein beruhmter Vertreter der literarischen Gattung 'Historischer Roman', wozu auch Scotts Roman Ivanhoe zahlt. In diesem Roman tritt nicht nur der tapfere Ritter Wilfried Ivanhoe als Protagonist auf, sondern es fallt auf, dass besonders der Jude Isaak und seine Tochter Rebekka eine grosse Rolle in Scotts historischem Roman spielen. Nun stellt sich die Frage, ob Scott eine realistische Darstellung der Juden zu jener Zeit anfertigte oder ob er die auffallend positive und romantisierte Beschreibung zu sehr unterstreicht und so die Gesellschaft in England zu Zeit der Regierung Richard Lowenherz' in ein schlechteres Licht ruckt als es verdient hat. In dieser Hausarbeit soll demnach folgende Frage zentral behandelt werden: Inwieweit stimmt die Darstellung der Juden in Scotts Ivanhoe mit der Realitat zur Zeit Richard Lowenherz' im 12. Jahrhundert uberein?Nach einer einfuhrenden Zusammenfassung der Romanhandlung wird zunachst auf die textinterne Darstellung der Juden eingegangen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird hierbei auf das Moment der Mitleidserweckung gelegt, da dies das offensichtliche Mittel der Sympathielenkung auf Isaak und Rebekka ist. Anhand ausgewahlter Szenen soll dieser Moment der Mitleidserweckung illustriert werden. Um die Darstellung auf ihren Wahrheitsgehalt hin zu untersuchen, folgt ein Vergleich der textinternen Aspekte mit den uberlieferten Fakten, die die Juden und die Gesellschaft um sie herum beschreiben. Uber das Leben der Juden im Mittelalter existieren etliche Schriften, die bei der Untersuchung auf den Wahrheitsgehalt von Scotts Beschreibungen helfen sollen. Um den Rahmen dieser Hausarbeit nicht zu sprengen, werden nur einige Punkte verglichen, die im Roman besonders hervorstechen. Der Gesichtspunkt vom Juden als Geldverleiher, die Bekehrungsversuche und ihre Stellung in der Gesellschaft werden den grossten Teil einnehmen. Falls sich Differenzen zwischen historischem Roman und den historischen Tatsachen erkennen lassen, ist zu berucksichtigen, was Scott dazu bewegt haben mag, diese Elemente abzuandern. Mit dieser Hausarbeit wird schliesslich erzielt, das Problem, dass sich bei der Darstellung historischer Ereignisse ergibt und die damit aufgeworfene Frage, ob Scott dem historischen Vorbild gerecht wird, zu untersuchen. Anhand der Sekundarliteratur, die von jener Zeit berichtet, soll diese Frage in der Folge der Analyse beantwortet werd
