Jahrhundert Element der deutschen Sprachkritik. Mit dem Aufkommen der historisch vergleichenden Methodik in der Sprachwissenschaft wurde die Entwicklung der Sprache seit dem Mittelhochdeutschen zunehmend als Sprachverfall betrachtet1. Schopenhauer vertrat beispielsweise die Ansicht, dass die Sprache "stufenweise immer schlechter" werde. Sprachgebrauch, der als falsch eingestuft wird, schlechter Stil oder die Einf�hrung von fremden W�rtern und Wendungen aus anderen Sprachen werden seitdem regelm��ig als Belege f�r den Verfall der Sprache angef�hrt. Diese Skepsis gegen�ber dem Wandel von Sprache setzt sich bis zum heutigen Tage fort und dominiert insbesondere die �ffentliche Sprachkritik in den Massenmedien. �berschriften wie "'Eine uns�glich scheu�liche Sprache'", die eine SPIEGEL- Titelstory benennt, zeugen von einer haupts�chlich von Pessimismus gepr�gten Sicht von Sprachwandel. Kritik an Sprache und Sprachgebrauch wird zumeist vor dem Hintergrund der Annahme eines stetig fortschreitenden Verfalls der Sprache ge�bt. In der Linguistik hingegen wird, wie schon bei Saussure, der das Prinzip der Transformation der Sprache in der Zeit formuliert hat4, von einem stetigen Sprachwandel entsprechend der sich �ndernden sprachlichen Bed�rfnisse angesichts einer sich ver�ndernden Umwelt ausgegangen. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht mittels einer Analyse der seit 1964 bis 2007 im Nachrichtenmagazin DER SPIEGEL und bei SPIEGEL Online erschienenen Beitr�ge zur Sprachverfallsthematik, mit welchen Argumenten die These vom Sprachverfall belegt wird, um die Begr�ndungen und Implikationen daraufhin linguistischen Grundannahmen und Erkenntnisse
