Den "Enthusiasten der UN" denen die Organisation f�r alles Gute und Sch�ne dieser Welt verantwortlich zu sein scheint, die Defizite immer nur den Mitgliedsstaaten anlasten, stehen den Fundamentalkritikern gegen�ber, die kein gutes Haar am vermeintlichen "Zentralorgan des Multilateralismus" lassen und die UNO in wichtigen Fragen der internationalen Politik f�r irrelevant halten. Mit der Realit�t haben diese politischen Extrempositionen wenig zu tun. Dennoch spielt die Organisation in den Diskussionen �ber die Zukunft der internationalen Politik eine eigent�mliche Rolle. Obwohl mehr als 60 Jahre alt, hat es mitunter den Anschein, als m�sste die Weltorganisation erst noch gegr�ndet werden. Denn sei es die Friedenssicherung, die St�rkung der Menschenrechte, die Bew�ltigung der globalen Umweltprobleme oder der Kampf gegen den internationalen Terrorismus mitsamt seinen vielschichten Ursachen - es gibt kaum ein globales Problem bei, bei deren Bearbeitung den UNO nicht eine Schl�sselrolle zugeschrieben w�rde. Andererseits wird im gleichen Atemzug darauf hingewiesen, dass es daf�r einer Erneuerung der UNO und einem grunds�tzlichem Umdenken der m�chtigen Mitgliedsstaaten bed�rfe. Die UNO bilden eine internationale Organisation, in der sich 192 Staaten als Mitglieder (Stand 01.01.2007) in der Absicht und gegenseitigen Verpflichtung verbunden haben, �ber die Kriegsverhinderung hinaus Frieden und humanit�re Lebensbedingungen f�r die V�lker der Welt zu gew�hrleisten.
