So liest man es in Zeitungen und Wirtschaftsberichten oder sieht es im Fernsehen. Vor allem von hohen Verantwortlichen der Stadt wird diese besondere Stellung Leipzigs immer wieder hervorgehoben. So schrieb der ehemalige Oberb�rgermeister Tiefensee im Magazin "Themen und Frequenzen" "Leipzig als Medienstadt kann sich mit K�ln, Hamburg, Berlin oder M�nchen sicherlich noch nicht messen, muss einen Vergleich zu diesen Metropolen aber auch nicht scheuen. Nach 1989 gelang es in vergleichsweise kurzer Zeit, die Branche zu einer tragenden S�ule der lokalen Wirtschaft zu formen."1 Doch was macht eine Stadt zu einer "Medienstadt"? Anders als die historisch gewachsenen Stadtbezeichnungen wie Hansestadt, Hauptstadt, Messestadt oder Universit�tsstadt, ist der Begriff der Medienstadt noch recht neu und verdeutlicht vor allem den Wettbewerb verschiedener, miteinander konkurrierender Standorte und wird vielfach zum Stadtmarketing genutzt. Was eine Medienstadt nun ausmacht l�sst sich an dieser Stelle nicht beantworten. Dazu fehlt eine allgemein anerkannte Definition. Fest jedoch steht, dass Leipzig als Medienstadt nicht nur propagiert wird, sondern der Mediensektor ein gro�es Gewicht auf Leipzigs Gesamtwirtschaft aus�bt. Das belegen die 5, 8 Prozent mit denen die rund 1700 Unternehmen an der Gesamtwirtschaft Leipzigs beteiligt sind.2 Gegenstand dieser Arbeit ist die Entstehung eines Medienclusters in Leipzig und die Frage ob der Leipziger Mediensektor sich auch zuk�nftig als wachstums- und leistungsf�hig erweisen kann.
