Die Individualethik basiert auf der Grundlage des Moralprinzips, von dem aus beurteilt wird, inwiefern eine individuell zurechenbare Handlung gut oder schlecht ist. Auf den Menschen bezogen bedeutet das, dass es "alle Menschen als Menschen zu behandeln" gilt. Nach Kant geht es um die Unverfügbarkeit der menschlichen Person, die als Selbstzweck anzuerkennen der "Kategorische Imperativ" gebietet. Individualethik ist die ethische Reflexion auf Handlungen, Haltungen und Einstellungen individueller Personen in diversen Praxisfeldern. Individualethik ist das Resultat zahlreicher Interaktionen, bei dem sich bestimmte Regeln in kleineren Gruppen in einem Entwicklungsprozess etablieren. Die Einhaltung dieser universellen Normen wie z.B. "Nicht lügen!", "Nicht stehlen!", "Nicht morden!", "Nicht ehebrechen!" haben sich im Entwicklungsprozess bewährt und verschaffen jedem Individuum einen persönlichen Vorteil. Eine Ethik, die nicht auf externen Vorgaben basiert, hat den Vorteil, dass sie ein Zusammenleben von Menschen verschiedenster Herkunft und Wertorientierung in Frieden, Solidarität und Würde zusammenleben lässt. Demnach sind Individualethik und Eigeninteresse keine Gegensätze, denn sie basieren auf Vorteilserwartungen und -erfahrungen.
