Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Australien, Ozeanien, Note: 2,0, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Wenn von Australien als "jüngstem Kontinent" die Rede ist, wird oft vergessen, dass Australien als "Land" sogar noch viel jünger ist. Erst am 1. Januar 1901 trat die Verfassung des "Commonwealth of Australia" in Kraft und löste damit die Verfassungen der vorher eigenständigen britischen Kolonien Neusüdwaldes, Tasmanien, Queensland, Victoria, Süd- und Westaustralien ab. Ein neuer Staat war damit geschaffen worden, aber auch eine Nation geboren? Diese Frage soll im Rahmen dieser Arbeit zu versuchsweise beantworten werden. Die systematische Kolonisation Australiens und die Begründung der Siedlungskolonie begann erst 1788 mit der Ansiedlung der ersten Sträflinge in Neusüdwales. Nach und nach wurden auch die anderen Kolonien gegründet, Australien erschlossen. Ein kurzer Überblick über die Entstehung der Kolonien steht am Anfang dieser Arbeit. Daran anschließend geht es um die Nationsbildung, wenn es denn eine solche überhaupt gegeben hat. Sahen sich die Bewohner der Kolonien als Engländer oder schon Australier? Vertraten sie gemeinsame Interessen oder lebten sie für sich allein? Politisch gab es zunächst kaum weitreichende Entwicklungen. Erst im Laufe der Zeit entwickelten die Kolonien ein politisches Bewusstsein und wollten weg von dem Ruf als reine Sträflingskolonie. Bis Ideen eines vereinten Australien aufkamen, dauerte es noch einige Zeit. Auf zwei Ebenen kann eine Entwicklung beobachtet werden. Einmal innerhalb der Gesellschaft, in der sich die Bewohner langsam als "Australier" begriffen. Dies zeigte sich an Organisationen wie der "Australian Natives' Association", die seit ihrer Gründung 1871 großen Zulauf hatte. Zum Zweiten in der Politik, in der Vorkämpfer wie Henry Parkes als Verfechter der Einigung der Kolonien auftraten.
