Mit dem Umbruch des Romischen Reiches am Ende des zweiten Jahrhunderts nach Christus befasst sich diese Arbeit unter dem Titel 'Von Marcus Aurelius zu Commodus - Das Ende des Adoptivkaisertums'. Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stehen die Hintergrunde der Machtubergabe des 'Philosophenkaisers' an seinen leiblichen Sohn und deren Bedeutung fur das Principat. Unter der Fragestellung 'Beinhaltete die Nachfolgeregelung Marcus Aurelius' ein Scheitern des Adoptivkaisertums?' soll auf den nachsten Seiten erortert werden, was aufgrund der negativen Pragung der Commodus-Regierung nicht selten als beginnender Niedergang des Romischen Reiches wahrgenommen worden ist.Der erste Gliederungspunkt dient der historischen Einordnung des thematischen Gegenstands, indem zunachst die Adoptionspraxis in der Form, wie sie seit dem Ende des ersten Jahrhunderts n. Chr. bestand, und danach die Designation des Commodus erlautert werden. Das folgende Kapitel ist von der Erkenntnisabsicht geleitet, ob Marcus Aurelius ganzlich von Commodus' Eignung fur das Principat uberzeugt war, oder ob er trotz der schon fruh getroffenen Entscheidung, seinen leiblichen Sohn die Nachfolge antreten zu lassen, auch Zweifel an dessen Tauglichkeit hatte. Daruber hinaus soll herausgearbeitet werden, ob es in Commodus' Biographie vor Herrschaftsbeginn Anzeichen fur seine mangelnde Befahigung gab. Um dies zu beantworten, hat der Verfasser die drei Hauptquellen fur das 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. zu Rate gezogen: das WerkGeschichte des romischen Kaisertums seit Mark AurelHerodians aus Syrien, die Romische Geschichte Cassius Dios und die Commodus-Biographie der Historia Augusta.Ob es andere Optionen fur den Thron als Commodus gegeben hatte und welche Auswirkungen es gehabt hatte, wenn Aurelius diese gezogen hatte, damit beschaftigt sich Kapitel drei, bevor in der Schlussbetrachtung die abschliessende Bewertung dieser bedeutenden 'Personalentscheidung' vorgenommen wird.Bei der Bearbeitung der Fragestellung hat sich neben den oben aufgefuhrten Quellen auch der Panegyricus(Lobrede auf den Kaiser Trajan) Plinius' des Jungeren als wichtig erwiesen. An Sekundarliteratur hilfreich fur die Anfertigung dieser Arbeit waren vor allem folgende Werke: Commodusvon Michael Stahl, Grundriss der romischen Geschichte mit Quellenkunde I: Republik und Kaiserzeit bis 284. n. Chr.von Hermann Bengtson, Geschichte der romischen Kaiserzeit von Augustus bis zu Konstantin von Karl Christ sowie Romische Geschichte von Alfred Heuss
