Diese Arbeit stellt einen Vergleich von jeweils zwei Komodien der beiden Autoren an: Volpone und The Alchemist von Ben Jonson und A Midsummer Night's Dream sowie As You Like It von William Shakespeare. Da alle vier Werke in einem Zeitraum von nur funfzehn Jahren in England entstanden sind und gleichermassen als Komodien bezeichnet werden, liegt die Annahme nahe, sie seien sich im thematischen Aufbau ahnlich, gerade auch, weil Shakespeare und seine Schauspieltruppe, die Lord Chamberlain's Men bzw. die King's Men, einige von Jonsons Stucken aufgefuhrt haben.Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist, einen Vergleich der vier Stucke durch eine umfassende Analyse durchzufuhren, um Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten herauszustellen. Die dabei zu Grunde liegende These ist, dass sich trotz des vorherrschenden Bildes von Jonson als 'Satiriker' und Shakespeare als 'Romantiker' uberraschende Ahnlichkeiten in ihren Komodien finden lassen, die die zentralen Themen des Dramas der Renaissance widerspiegeln. Dabei erhebt diese Arbeit keinen normativen Anspruch darauf, einen der beiden Autoren in einem besonderen Licht darzustellen. Das Augenmerk wird vielmehr darauf gelenkt, wie die Stucke auf das Publikum wirken, indem verschiedene Ebenen von Theatralitat sowie die Rolle von Fantasie und Realitat auf Handlungsebene, aber auch der Ebene der Charaktere angesprochen werden. Als Ausgangsbasis fur den Vergleich dient Jonsons Komodie Volpone. Die Auswahl der Vergleichskriterien beschrankt sich auf die genannten, die sich auf das Schein und Sein, auf Illusion und Wahrheit beziehen. Damit werden langst nicht alle Aspekte abgedeckt, die man zu einem umfassenden Vergleich heranziehen konnte. Unberucksichtigt bleiben z.B. das Thema der Liebe, welches bei Shakespeare sicherlich eine bedeutendere Stellung einnimmt als bei Jonson, sowie die Clowns und Fools und andere komische Strukturen auf sprachlicher Stufe und Figurenebene. Auch eine geschlechtsspezifische Analyse kann in dieser Arbeit nur am Rande geleistet werden, in diesem Fall jedoch besonders bei As You Like It
