Differenziell wie kaum ein anderer epischer Text der hofischen Klassik wird seit jeher der Gregorius Hartmanns von Aue beurteilt. Die Ubertragung eines bereits volkssprachlich verfassten Legendenstoffs, wie er in der altfranzosischen Vie du pape saint Gregoire vorlag, die soziokulturelle Zuordnung des Verfassers zum zahringischen Herzogshof und, damit verbunden, zu einer laikal-volkssprachlichen Adelskultur, die fehlende Zuordnung der Hauptfigur zu einer historisch bezeugten Personlichkeit oder gar einem kirchlich approbierten Heiligen sowie die Zugehorigkeit des Textes zum literarischen Typus der Sunderheiligen-Legende, der durch Hartmann in die mittelhochdeutsche fiktionale Literatur eingefuhrt wurde, machen den in der Form des vierhebigen Reimpaarverses abgefassten Text gewissermassen zu einem Unikum und zugleich zu einem beliebten Gegenstand der germanistischen Mediavistik. Im Gregorius sind aus dem hofischen Roman gelaufige Erzahlmuster mit einem uberlieferten Legendenstoff verbunden; eine genaue Gattungszuordnung wird nicht zuletzt dadurch erschwert, dass die heilige Person, die ublicherweise im Mittelpunkt der legendarischen Erzahlung steht, hier keinem der historischen Gregor-Papste zugeordnet werden kann. Eine der umstrittensten Streitfragen handelt von der Schuld der aus einem Geschwisterinzest geborenen Figur, die spater unwissend die eigene Mutter heiratet und dennoch nach 17jahriger hartester Busse Erlosung erlangt und sogar zum Haupt der Christenheit erhoben wird. Moraltheologische Fragestellungen werden vom Dichter selbst im Text explizit thematisiert, der seinen bearbeiteten Erzahlstoff somit - zur Zeit der fruhscholastischen Theologie - schon von vorneherein problematisiert. In dieser Arbeit soll untersucht werden, wie sich ein Zusammentreffen hofischer und legendarischer Erzahlmuster in der Struktur des Werks niederschlagt. Hierzu wurde Hartmanns Pratext bewusst als Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung gewahlt, der gewissermassen die literarischen Voraussetzungen fur den Gregorius darstellt; ein Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt demnach im Bereich der Stoff- und Uberlieferungsgeschichte bis hin zu Thomas Manns Roman 'Der Erwahlte', dennoch wird bereits auch der kodikologische Forschungsbefund zur Uberlieferungslage des Gregorius in den hoch- und spatmittelalterlichen Verbundhandschriften angemessen gewurdi
