Die mythologische Figur des Titanensohns Prometheus hat uber fast alle Jahrtausende das Interesse von Literaten und Kunstlern beschaftigt. Prometheus als Feuerbringer und Menschenbildner, als Vorausschauender und listiger Betruger, Prometheus im Kampf gegen Zeus und, daraus resultierend, als gequalter Busser fur die Menschheit - das kunstlerische Repertoire, oder anders gesagt, die individuelle Interpretierbarkeit dieser Figur, die aus vielen Einzelaspekten besteht, ist erschopfend genug, um dieses Interesse zu rechtfertigen. Die Geschichte, die hinter Prometheus steckt, sein Schicksal und dessen ratselhaftes Ende, die Offenheit, mit der man Prometheus zum Helden deklarieren oder als Verrater verdammen kann, wurde im Laufe der Zeit immer wieder von Schriftstellern, Philosophen und Kunstlern erzahlt. Jeder dieser 'Autoren' bringt mit der Art und Weise seines Erzahlens auch ein Stuck seiner eigenen Personlichkeit zum Ausdruck und zeigt, allein durch seine thematische Wahl und durch die Konzentration auf einen bestimmten Teilaspekt des Prometheus-Mythos, wie er die Figur des Prometheus versteht und wie er ihn in Erinnerung behalten mochte. Diese Arbeit beschaftigt sich mit den bildnerisch-kunstlerischen und literarischen Darstellungen der Prometheus-Figur, wobei der Schwerpunkt jedoch eindeutig bei der Kunst liegt. Durch einen mehr oder weniger stringenten Blick auf mehrere Epochen, Zeitalter und Kunstler soll exemplarisch die Spannweite der Prometheus-Darstellungen sichtbar gemacht werden. Die Entwicklung, welche die Prometheus-Figur dabei durchlauft, kann grobpoetisch unter dem Stichwort ?Menschwerdung? festgehalten werden. Wie es dazu kam, dass ein Titanensohn, ein Gott, im Laufe der Geschichte, der Umschreibungen, Mehrdeutungen und Interpretationen immer mehr 'vermenschlicht' wurde, seine Taten und sein Denken immer mehr zu einem individuellen Schicksal und nicht mehr unter eine gottliche Sagen- und Heilsgeschichte gestellt wurden und somit nicht mehr einem ?fatum?, einer ubergeordneten Kraft, folgten, soll Thema dieser Arbeit sein
