Der Kommunikations- und Medientheoretiker Norbert Bolz hat einmal gesagt: 'Was wir Moderne nennen - also die Zeit zwischen der europaischen Aufklarung und dem Ersten Weltkrieg - hat uns mit idealistischen Zumutungen uberlastet und mit humanistischen Idealen gekodert. Deshalb haben wir heute eine ambivalente Einstellung zur Moderne: sie ist Utopie und Alptraum zugleich. Deshalb fallt es uns so schwer, souveran in eine neue Zeit einzutreten. Jahrhunderts alle Lebensbereiche und die Kunstler machten es sich zur Aufgabe dieses neue Welt- und Zeitempfinden zu befordern. Jedes Kunstwerk wurde zur Antwort auf die sozialen, politischen und geistigen Zustande und Veranderungen dieser Zeit. Die Maler verliessen ihren bisherigen Weg, die Wirklichkeit naturgetreu wiederzugeben - und setzten ihr ihre innere Natur entgegen. Diese neue Art, die Welt wahrzunehmen und zu beurteilen, wurde zum neuen Inhalt der Kunst. Zu diesem Inhalt der Kunst gehorten nun auch Provokationen, Obszonitaten und Hassliches als Antwort auf eine aus den Fugen geratene Welt mit einer fragwurdig gewordenen Kultur. Die Philosophen im Allgemeinen und die Asthetiker im Speziellen fuhlten sich dazu berufen, dieser neuen Kunst auf den Zahn zu fuhlen. Was war plotzlich aus der schonen Kunst geworden an deren Stelle nun zunehmend das Hassliche und Obszone trat? Wie hasslich und obszon durfte die Kunst sein, damit uberhaupt noch von Kunst die Rede sein konnte? Der Schriftsteller Christian Felix Weisse sagte uber das Hassliche, es sei das 'unmittelbare Dasein der Schonheit' und laut dem Philosophen Karl Rosenkranz ist das Hassliche das notwendige negative Korrelat zum Schonen, dessen die Kunst bedarf, um die Idee nicht einseitig zur Anschauung zu bringen
