Viele Intellektuelle sind auf der Suche nach der neuen Form des Humanismus, sprechen von der Krise des europaischen Bewusstseins. Die Schriftsteller ubernehmen die Rolle der Kritiker der Gesellschaft und versuchen, humanistische Werte zu verteidigen. In der Epoche des Kriegs beobachten, dokumentieren und erleben sie die geistiege und kulturelle Krise Europas. Zu diesen Personlichkeiten gehoren in Deuschland vor allem Thomass Mann, Allfred Doblin, Hermann Hesse, deren grosste Romane in zwanziger Jahren entstanden worden sind. Thomas Mann im 'Zauberberg' Hermann Hesse im 'Steppenwolf' versuchen, angesichts des unvermeindlichen Kulturuntergangs in ihrer Schopfung die wichtigsten kulturellen Werte zu wiedergeben. Auf verschiedene Art und Weise prasentieren sie die Gegensatze im menschlichen Denken und Handeln, die dem Leben den Sinn geben und gleichzeitig die hochste Gefahr bilden. Der tragische Bruch zwischen Geist und Leben aussert sich im Werk Hesses in mannigfacher Gestalt und die Einsamkeit des auf sich verwiesenen Individuums ist sein Leitton. In vielen seiner Dichtungen handelt sich um die Auseinandersetzung des Einzelnen und Umwelt und die mogliche Einfugung des Kunstlers in die burgerliche Wirklichkeit und ihre Ordnungen. Eines seiner bekanntesten Werke- 'Der Steppenwolf' ist einerseits das Studium der Entfremdung und eine Kritik der burgerlichen Kultur andererseits. In dieser Arbeit mochte man sich mit dem Thema der vielfachen Krise beschaftigen, in der sich nicht nur der Hauptheld des Romans, sondern auch die Kultur und Wirklichkeit, sowie auch der Verfasser selbst befand, als er das Werk schuff. Deshalb wird im ersten Kapitel das Leben des Autors naher besprochen. Im nachsten Teil der Arbeit ist Harry Haller schon ein Ausgangspunkt fur die Charakterisierung der mannigfacher 'Krankheit', die auf verschiedenen Ebenen des menschlichen Daseins vorkommt. [.
