Ende des 18. und Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts erreichen die nordamerikanischen Staaten und Lateinamerika ihre Unabhangigkeit von der Kolonialmacht. Eigenstandige Staaten mit eigenen Verfassungen werden gegrundet. Die ehemaligen Kolonien werden politisch unabhangig. Es stellt sich nun die Frage ob diese politische Unabhangigkeit auch eine sprachliche Unabhangigkeit mit sich bringen kann, obwohl die Sprache des Mutterlandes zum Grossteil auch die eigene ist. Gibt es andere Moglichkeiten der sprachlichen Abgrenzung als die Einsetzung einer fremden Sprache, die in der Durchfuhrung vollig unmoglich ware? Gerade fur die Literatur spielt diese Frage eine grosse Rolle, denn sie besteht aus Sprache und ist ein Trager von Kultur. Und diese Kultur gilt es neu zu definieren, oder auch zu erschaffen im Hinblick auf eine eigene Identitat des neuen Staates. Daher scheint es einleuchtend, dass neben Politik und Wirtschaft auch die Sprachenfrage die damaligen Denker, Gelehrten und Staatsmanner bewegt. Die Sprache also als wichtige Ingredienz im jungen Land das sich vom ehemaligen Besatzer abgrenzen mochte.Dieses Thema fand einen Platz auf beiden Seiten des amerikanischen Kontinents, auch wenn es auf unterschiedliche Art zur Sprache kommt. In Lateinamerika kamen, zumindest Teile dieser Debatte, fur die Offentlichkeit zuganglich zur Sprache. Diese beruhmte P olemik wurde uber die chilenische Presse von den zwei oft gegenubergestellten Personlichkeiten in diesem Thema ausgetragen: Andes Bello und Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Aber nicht nur diese beiden machten sich ausfuhrlich Gedanken zur spanischen Sprache in Lateinamerika. Auch einige Zeit spater gab es einen Universalgelehrten, der sich in einer fur diese Zeit ausserst innovativen Weise der Sache widmete: Rufino Jose Cuervo.Auf der anderen Seite, in Nordamerika, geht es zwar etwas leiser zu, jedoch nicht minder durchdacht.
