Says Kritik an Smith' Handhabe der okonomischen Arbeit und Guter fuhrte zu einem erweiterten Paradigma, das auf einer Weiterfuhrung der Gedanken bezuglich der werteschaffenden Arbeit aufbaut: Wenn Smith uber den Wert des Bodens hinausgehend auch diejenige Arbeit, welche Werte an materiellen Gegenstanden schafft, als produktiv und wohlstandsmehrend ansieht, warum sollte nicht auch Arbeit ohne stoffliche Grundlage und materielles Resultat als werteschaffend betrachtet werden? 'Es gebe eben Produkte, deren Consumption im Augenblicke ihrer Schopfung erfolgt und die durchaus einen Tauschwert hatten: Dies heisse ich ein immaterielles (korperloses) Gut.'Marx greift diesen Gedanken bezuglich der Dienste spater auf, wenn er beispielhaft die Ortsveranderung selbst als das Produkt der Transportindustrie bezeichnet.
