Der 'Reinhart Fuchs' des Elsassers Heinrich (der Glichezare) ist ein mittelhochdeutsches Werk des ausgehenden 12. Jahrhunderts und steht in der mittelalterlichen Tradition der Tierepik, also jener Versepen, die die aus der Volksdichtung bekannte und uberlieferte Tiergeschichte von Fuchs und Wolf aufgreifen und dabei auf das mittelalterlich- lateinische Werk 'Ysengrimus' und die Bestiarien, wie den 'Physiologus', zuruckgreifen, wo die behandelten Eigenschaften von Tieren nur als Anknupfungspunkt fur eine heilsgeschichtliche Deutung geben. Tierszenen und Fabeln, meist mit lehrhaft- moralischem Inhalt, kennt das gesamte Mittelalter; spatestens seit Pierre de Saint-Cloud (1176) diente der Antagonismus von Fuchs und Wolf als Parodie auf die Ritterepik des 12. Jahrhunderts und die Minne; indem die Gestalt des Fuchses zum Ritter gemacht wurde, pervertierte und entlarvte sie die hofische Welt mit dem Ideal der Minne als Schein; die Branchen dieser Fuchs-Abenteuer in einem Umfang von dreissigtausend Versen1 wurden gesammelt unter dem gemeinsamen Namen Roman de Renard uberliefert. Bis in die Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts war die Literaturgeschichte der Tierdichtung in der lateinischen Klosterliteratur verlaufen; im lateinischen Hexametergedicht Ecbasis captivi aus dem 11. Jahrhundert wurde die epische Behandlung dieses Stoffes zu einem Stuck der klosterlichen Lehr- und Erbauungsliteratur. Kern der mittelalterlichen Tierfabel ist dabei die Darstellung der Tierwelt als ein Reich, dessen Herrscher der Lowe ist und in dem die Feindschaft von Wolf und Fuchs die bewegenden Handlungen hervorruft. Nivardus von Gent schreibt dann im Ysengrimus die erste vollstandige Geschichte von Fuchs und Wolf, mit dem Wolfen und dessen Schindung zur Heilung des kranken Lowen im Mittelpunkt, mitsamt der dann im Reinhart Fuchs ausgebreiteten Hoftagsszenerie. Heinrich der Glichezare fugt hier die episodischen Begebenheiten der Fabel zu einer einheitlichen Handlung zusammen; obwohl die Kettentechnik der vorangegangenen Reinhart-Dichtungen noch ersichtlich ist. Die Episierung der tradierten Fuchsgeschichte ist hier parodistisch am hofischen Ritterroman orientiert; der Abschluss durch den Gerichtstag ermoglicht hier nicht nur die Strukturierung der traditionell schwankahnlich prasentierten Branchen der Geschichte auf ein Ziel hin, sondern dient auch der satirischen Darstellung der Verkehrtheit der Welt anhand eines warnenden, die Leser durchaus erschreckenden Beispiel
