Peter Singer stellt in seinem Werk 'Praktische Ethik' eine strikte Trennung zwischen Mensch und Person auf. Seiner Ansicht nach ist nicht jeder Mensch eine Person, und umgekehrt gibt es Personen, die keine Menschen sind. 'Person' stellt fur ihn einen Status dar, den man erlangen und zugleich auch jederzeit wiederverlieren kann, unabhangig davon, ob man Mensch ist oder nicht. 'Daher solltenwir die Lehre, die das Leben von Angehorigen unserer Gattung uber das Lebender Angehorigen anderer Gattungen erhebt, ablehnen. Manche Angehorigenanderer Gattungen sind Personen: manche Angehorigen unserer eigenen Speziessind es nicht. Keine objektive Beurteilung kann den Standpunkt unterstutzen, dass es immer schlimmer ist, Mitglieder unserer eigenen Spezies, die keinePersonen sind, zu toten, als Mitglieder anderer Spezies, die es sind. Im Gegenteilgibt es, wie wir sahen, starke Grunde dafur, der Uberzeugung zu sein, dass es ansich schwerwiegender ist, Personen das Leben zu nehmen, als Nicht-Personen.So scheint es, dass etwa die Totung eines Schimpansen schlimmer ist als dieTotung eines menschlichen Wesens, welches aufgrund einer angeborenengeistigen Behinderung keine Person ist und nie sein kann.'1 Dieses Zitatverdeutlicht Singers eigenwillige Verwendung des Begriffs Person und gibt denHinweis darauf, dass er Personen einen hoheren Lebensschutz zubilligt als Nicht-Personen.
