Le Faune de Stephane Mallarme a une longue et interessante genese. Concu au depart comme intermede heroique (1865) et passant par un deuxieme etat qui est l'Improvisation d'un faune (1875), la version definitive du poeme paraitra en avril 1876 dans une edition de luxe illustree par Manet sous le titre de L'apres-midi d'un faune. Et c'est cette version, une eglogue comme Mallarme precise, qui est le plus difficile a comprendre. Ce poeme renferme une tres haute et tres belle idee, mais les vers sont terriblement difficiles a faire [...], dit le poete lui-meme a propos du poeme. Lui, qui a mis au point egalement: [C]e n'est point avec des idees que l'on fait des vers....C'est avec des mots. Trois reperes principaux deja que l'auteur nous indique et qui nous aideront a trouver les traits importants de notre etude de l'expression langagiere: Il nous faudra - entre outre bien evidemment - analyser le vocabulaire et les vers, voire le metre. En plus, on essayera de trouver ce qui n'est pas tout de suite visible (sachant qu'un poeme tient beaucoup de sa lecture a haute voix pour faire entendre la rime, le metre et le rythme) dans le texte. Mallarme, un des pionniers de l'art poetique du XXe siecle, a commence a ecrire le Faune apres avoir travaille sur l'Herodiade a propos de laquelle il dit: [C]ette ?uvre solitaire m'avait sterilise . Communs est l'emprunt des scenes, figures et motifs qui revelent la tradition greco-latine. D'autant plus, le poete renforce son refus d'un art pour tous par son travail de [p]eindre, non la chose, mais l'effet qu'elle produit . C'est un ecart qui s'ouvre: realite et reve, recours a la tradition poetique et en meme temps la tentation de sa transformation tout en gardant l'unite d'un poeme.Notre piste de lecture sera cet effet de division qui unie en meme temps de differents niveaux langagiere: Mon crime, c'est d'avoir [...] divise tout en gardant l'unite classique d'un poeme ecrit en alexandrins. Nous allons d'abord analyser ce qui nous semble le plus evident, c'est-a-dire le repere temporel, le corpus graphique et la rime, pour etudier dans une deuxieme partie le metre et le rythme de l'extrait. La troisieme partie sera consacree a l'etude syntaxique et semantique.
