That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. Ein kleiner Schritt nur fur einen Mann, aber ein gewaltiger Sprung fur die Menschheit. Mit diesen Worten betrat der neununddreissigjahrige Amerikaner Neil Armstrong am 21. Juli 1969 um 3 Uhr 56 Minuten mitteleuropaischer Zeit im Mare Tranquillitatis, dem Meer der Ruhe, als erster Mensch die Oberflache des Mondes. Doch schon Tage zuvor, am 16. Juli 1969 um 14 Uhr und 32 Minuten MEZ waren die Augen der Welt auf Cape Kennedy gerichtet, als sich von der Startrampe 39A eine machtige Rakete des Typs Saturn V erhob, in deren Apollokapsel die drei Astronauten Neil Armstrong, MichaelCollins und Edwin Aldrin ihre Reise zum Mond antraten. Wernher von Braun, der Direktor des George C. Marshall Spaceflight Centers der NASA, beschrieb die Landung des Menschen auf dem Mond als ... das bedeutendste Geschehnis in der Evolution und Geschichte der Menschheit, seit das Leben die Meere verliess und auf dem Festland eine Heimstatt fand. Dieses Ereignis ist auch in der heutigen Generation als ein bedeutender Schritt in der Entwicklung der Raumfahrt unvergessen. Doch nur wenige werden sich an die grosse Tragodie erinnern, die sich am 27. Januar 1967 auf der Startrampe 34 auf Cape Kennedy ereignete bei der drei US-amerikanische Astronauten ihr Leben verloren. Eine Verkettung unglucklicher Umstande, mangelnde Sicherheitsvorkehrungen, einschliesslich der von den Experten nicht einkalkulierte Risiken was das Inventar der Raumkapsel anging und der offensichtlich falschen Einschatzung gewisser physikalischer und chemischer Reaktionen beim Umgang mit den lebensnotwendigen Sauerstoffreservoirs, aber auch menschliches Versagen, bzw. todlicher Leichtsinn, Sorglosigkeit und fahrlassiges Handeln bei der Auseinandersetzung mit der raumfahrtechnischen Materie, fuhrten zu der Apollo1-Katastrophe, die einen gewaltigen Einschnitt in der bisherigen Entwicklung des Weltraumfahrtprogrammes bedeutete.
