Seit es Stadte gibt, setzen sich Menschen mit dem Leben in ihnen und ihrem eigenenkonkreten Erleben des stadtischen Alltags auseinander. Vor allem Kunstler undGeisteswissenschaftler beschaftigten sich in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten inzunehmendem Masse mit Fragen und Problemen, die das Stadtleben aufwarf. So versuchtensie zu klaren, ob das Leben in einem kunstlich geschaffenen Umfeld uberhauptder Natur des Menschen entspricht, oder ob er daran nicht eher zugrunde geht, ob er stark und flexibel genug ist, sich neuen Anforderungen zu stellen und anzupassen, oder aufgrund seiner Unfahigkeit in die Isolation getrieben wird. Seit dem19.Jahrhundert entstanden immer mehr Grossstadte, und die Fragen verscharften sich: Ist hier ein menschenwurdiges Dasein uberhaupt noch moglich? Oder lasst die Flutvon Menschen und Maschinen, das endlos erscheinende Meer von Hausern undStrassen jede Gefuhlsregung verkummern, erstickt jedes uber den profanen Alltaghinausgehende Denken im Keim?Die vorliegende Arbeit beschaftigt sich mit der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung derGrossstadt vor circa 100 Jahren, speziell im Bereich der Literatur. Sie versteht sich alsEinblick und Anregung, da naturgemass bereits eine Fulle an Material zu diesemThema existiert. In der Einleitung gehe ich kurz auf die Situation der grossen Stadte inder damaligen Zeit ein, lasse ein Paar kritische Stimmen zu Wort kommen und stelledie Ansichten von Georg Simmel (einer der bedeutendsten Soziologen dieser Zeit) zudiesem Thema vor. Danach wende ich mich Rainer Maria Rilke zu, der - obwohleher Lyriker - den 'ersten modernen deutschen Roman'1 um diese Zeit geschriebenhat: 'Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge'. Der dritte Teil bleibt der fruhexpressionistischenLyrik vorbehalten; hier soll die Verbindung der prosperierendenund pulsierenden Grossstadt Berlin und dem aufkommenden Expressionismus - der'ersten wirklichen Grossstadtkunst in Deutschland uberhaupt'2 - aufgezeigt werden.1 Rainer Kirsch, Nachwort, in: R.
