Ce travail se veut une contribution au questionnement critique de la modernité du roman. L’analyse minutieuse de l’exploration que Hermann Broch fait de l’art du roman avec sa trilogie, Die Schlafwandler, engage le lecteur à interroger plus largement la vocation de la forme romanesque lors de sa métamorphose au premier tiers du vingtième siècle. Le pouvoir d’élucidation dévolu par Broch à ce genre déborde le cadre esthétique. L’auteur y désarticule une conception traditionnelle du temps et offre une interprétation de la situation de l’homme comme sujet de l’histoire (non comme seul sujet agissant, mais comme sujet parlant et producteur de signes). Cette étude questionne, enfin, les liens entre la modernité des ambitions de Broch et les mouvements littéraires qui lui furent contemporains en France, avant de mettre son œuvre en regard des réflexions et de la pratique artistique de deux de ses lecteurs : Milan Kundera et Henry Bauchau.

L’auteur : Isabelle Gabolde s’intéresse aux rapports entre littérature et connaissance, littérature et pensée politique, et au roman moderne compris comme domaine de la pensée. Ses travaux portent aussi sur les arts du roman, elle a notamment édité les textes réflexifs d’Henry Bauchau. Elle travaille, par ailleurs, dans le domaine de la culture à Montréal, au Canada.
