Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, an dessen 100. Geburtsjahr 2006 erinnert wird, gehört zu den großen buddhistischen Gelehrten der Gegenwart, deren Wirken weltweit Beachtung gefunden hat. Der Knecht Buddhas, so die Bedeutung des Namens Buddhadasa, den sich der Mönch selbst gegeben hat, kann in einem Atemzug mit dem Dalai Lama und dem vietnamesischen Mönch Thich Nhat Hanh genannt werden. Das von ihm gegründete Kloster Suan Mokkh, der Garten der Befreiung, lädt bis heute Menschen aus aller Welt ein, das Herz der buddhistischen Lehre in Praxis und Theorie kennen zu lernen. Dieses Buch ist die erste ausführliche Würdigung seines Lebens und Werks in deutscher Sprache. Es enthält drei Hauptteile, in denen die lokalen wie globalen Aspekte der Wirksamkeit von Leben und Werk des Mönchs betrachtet werden. Buddhadasa Bhikkhus Leben wird im Kontext der Geschichte Thailands im 20. Jahrhundert dargestellt. Zugleich wird der Einfluss seines Wirkens auf die Gesellschaft seines Heimatlandes analysiert. Im zweiten Hauptteil steht Buddhadasa Bhikkhus Reformation der buddhistischen Lehre und sein Schlüssel zum Verständnis der buddhistischen Spiritualität im Vordergrund. Schließlich werden sein Religionsverständnis und seine Sicht des Christentums beleuchtet.

About the Author :
Der Autor: Hans-Bernd Zöllner wurde 1942 geboren. Nach dem Studium der Theologie war er von 1970 bis 2002 in verschiedenen Funktionen als evangelischer Pfarrer tätig, darunter von 1983 bis 1990 als Auslandspfarrer in Thailand. Hier lernte er Buddhadasa Bhikkhu persönlich kennen und besuchte sein Kloster mehrere Male. Nach der Rückkehr nach Deutschland promovierte er im Fachbereich Orientalistik der Universität Hamburg und ist dort seit 1998 als Lehrbeauftragter tätig.
