Jozef Cíger Hronský geboren am 23. Februar 1896 in Zvolen als zweites Kind in einer Handwerker- und Musikerfamilie, 1907 Übersiedlung nach Krupina, 1910-1914 Studium an der Ungarischen Königlichen Lehrerbildungsanstalt in Levice und Anstellungen als Lehrer, 1917 Soldat an der italienischen Front, 1919 Heirat mit Valéria Ruzináková. 1920 entsteht als Erstlingswerk das Gedicht Sirota, 1923 die Prosaarbeit Petro, das erste Buch U nás (Bei uns), 1924 Najmladsí Závodský (Der jüngste Závodský), 1925 Domov (Heimat), Kremické povesti (Kremnitzer Sagen), 1927 in Prag der Roman Zitý dom v Klokoči (Das gelbe Haus in Klokoč). 1928 redigiert er die Zeitschrift Slniečko (Die Sonne), 1929 entsteht Medové srdce (Das Honigherz), 1930 Proroctvo Doktora Stankovského (Die Prophezeiung des Doktor Stankovský), Smelý zajko (Das mutige Häschen), 1931 der Roman Chlieb (Das Brot), Smelý zajko v Afrike (Das mutige Häschen in Afrika), Erzählungen unter dem Titel Zakopaný meč (Das vergrabene Schwert), 1932 Brondove rozprávky (Brondos Erzählungen), Budkáčik a Dubkáčik (Budkáčik und Dubkáčik), Sokoliar Tomás (Der Falkner Thomas), 1933 Jozef Mak, 1934 Sedem sŕdc (Sieben Herzen). 1935 Reise nach Amerika, 1936-1938 Reise nach Polen, 1940 Pisár Gráč (Der Schreiber Gráč), Tri múdre kozliatka (Die drei klugen Zicklein), Cesta slovenskou Amerikou (Reise durch das slowakische Amerika) in zwei Bänden. 1941 Verwalter der slowakischen Volksbibliothek, 1942 Reise nach Weimar. 1944 entsteht Na Bukvovom dvore (Auf Bukvovos Hof), er wird von Aufständischen verhaftet, 1945 folgt die Emigration mit der Familie nach Österreich, dann nach Italien, 1946 in Regia Coeli im Kerker inhaftiert, 1947 entsteht Predavač talizmanov Liberius Gaius od Porta Collina (Der Talisman-Verkäufer Liberius Gaius aus Porta Collin), und Andreas Búr Meister. 1948 Emigration nach Argentinien. 1956 Ehrenvorsitzender des Vereins slowakischer Schriftsteller und Künstler im Ausland, Vorsitzender des Slowakischen Nationalrates. 1957 Gründung der ausländischen «Matica slovenská». Am 13. Juli 1960 Tod in Luján, posthum erscheint der Roman Svet na Trasovisku (Die Welt im Moorland). Am 8. August 1993 wurden seine und seiner Gemahlin sterbliche Überreste aus Luján in die Heimat übertragen und auf dem Nationalfriedhof in Martin beigesetzt.

Die Autorin: Mária Bátorová, Germanistin und Slowakistin. Tätig als Literaturwissenschaftlerin am Institut für Weltliteratur der Slowakischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und extern als Dozentin am Pädagogischen Institut der Philosophischen-Fakultät der Komenský Universität In Bratislava. In der Zeit von 1995-1998 lehrte sie als Gastdozentin an der Universität in Köln am Rhein. Die Autorin konnte erst nach 1989 In Buchform publizieren. In der Forschung widmet sie sich tabuisierten Themen der literarischen Moderne.
