Die Detailanalyse von neun deutschen Versionen der beiden wichtigsten Erzählungen Hermann Melvilles, «Benito Cereno» und Billy Budd, versucht, jede der zwischen 1938 und 1967 erschienenen Übersetzungen als zeitgebundene Interpretation der Ausgangstexte sprechend zu machen und in den rezeptionshistorischen Kontext einzubetten. Neben zensurbedingten Eingriffen und dem Einfluß einer französichen Mittlerübersetzung im Fall der Versionen von 1938 wird der übersetzerischen Behandlung der Erzählstrategie, der Deutung der Protagonisten und den sprachlichen Problemen besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Die Detailanalyse der beiden erwähnten Texte wird ergänzt durch eine Skizze der Übersetzungsgeschichte aller übrigen Erzählungen und ein Verzeichnis bisher unbekannter Rezeptionsdokumente aus diesem Jahrhundert.
