Trotz zunehmender Untersuchungen zum Leben und Wirken Kaiser Maximilians I. von México und einer Neubewertung dieses idealistischen Monarchen findet sein Denkmal in Wien nur marginale Erwähnung. Dies ist umso erstaunlicher, als es sich dabei um ein qualitätvolles Hauptwerk des in Wien geschätzten Bildhauers Johann Meixner handelt. Druckgraphische Darstellungen von unterschiedlichstem Realitätscharakter, photographische Aufnahmen und sogar Notizen in den Sitzungsprotokollen der 1890 Wien inkorporierten Gemeinde Hietzing ermöglichten erstmals eine Rekonstruktion der Entstehung, Entwicklung und sukzessiven Veränderung des Denkmales, das vom Hietzinger Advokat Dr. Vinzenz Heller bereits Anfang Juli 1867 angeregt und nach dem Monument in Pola (1867, seit 1919 in Venedig) bzw. vor dem in Triest (1875) fertiggestellt wurde. Eingeleitet wird das Buch durch einen Abriß der Genese der dynastischen Denkmäler Wiens. Der Anhang der Kronprinzessin Stephanie-Denkmäler rundet das faszinierende Thema ab.
