Linux, ein relativ neues und kostenloses UNIX System für PCs hat sich in der letzten Zeit zu einer Alternative zu kommerziellen Systemen entwickelt. Es macht aus einem gängigen PC mit 386/486/Pentium-Prozessor eine UNIX Workstation, deren Performance durchaus mit klassischen RISC Workstations vergleichbar ist. Dieses Buch, das nun in einer zweiten, überarbeiteten und erweiterten Auflage vorliegt, soll die vielen Möglichkeiten von Linux und damit auch der anderen Tools und Utilities aus dem Internet einem breiten Publikum vermitteln. Erklärt werden neben den wichtigsten Grundlagen und Konzepten von UNIX auch die Beschaffung, Installation und Konfiguration von Linux. Schwerpunkte bilden dabei die graphische Oberfläche, die Netzwerkfähigkeit und die Tools des GNU-Projekts.
