About the Book

The emergence of civil aviation as a means of mass transportation is primarily due to the large-scale construction of jet airplanes in the past 30 years or so. However, now a large number of these planes are currently operating at or beyond their designed lifespans. The structural integrity of these ageing planes has, therefore, become an issue of concern to all countries. To bring the required technical and research focus onto the the issue of ageing airplanes, the Federal Aviation Administration sponsored a symposium in Atlanta, in March 1990 at which industrial and academic experts from several countries in North America, Europe and Asia were invited to discuss their experiences and propose solutions. This work contains the original papers that were presented at that symposium and aims to bring these experts' collective experience of the structural integrity of ageing airplanes to the attention of the professional and research community at large.
