About the Book

In nature, zygotic embryos are formed by the fusion of male and female gametes. In cell culture, in contrast, embryos are formed from vegetative / somatic cells. Therefore, this unique process in plants is called somatic embryogenesis. The developmental pathway of somatic embryo formation is very similar to zygotic embryogenesis. Most of the present knowledge underlying embryogenesis has come from morphological studies involving histology, scanning electron microscopy but the molecular information is relatively new. Recently, in the past few years several new genes have been identified and some informations on genomics and proteomics have also been available at various stages of development. Besides carrot, a wide range of plant systems have been studied to understand the molecular mechanism of gene expression. Nevertheless, the precise mechanism controlling entire transformation (vegetative to embryonic) still remains insufficient. The subject of somatic embryogenesis in plant cells is important for several disciplines including plant biotechnology, genetics, cell biology but also for agricultural applications. The chapter contributions were carefully selected and will present most up-to-date knowledge about somatic embryogenesis in plants. New functional genomic, genetic and proteomic approaches will be highlighted in several chapters in this book. This would be a major benefit for many graduate and post-graduate students as well as for scientists and lecturers representing potential readers of this book. The most useful information concerning the Plant Endocytosis book (such as book outline, content, chapter outlines, information about editors and authors) will be announced on thewebsite, which will be regularly up-dated. The preparation of the whole book on CD-ROM is possible. Additionally, the book could be provided with an additional CD-ROM with images and movies.
