In der Ende der 1980er Jahre einsetzenden Diskussion uber Globalisierung spie- 1 len multinationale Unternehmen eine zentrale Rolle. War das wissenschaftliche Interesse an multinationalen Unternehmen bis dahin weitgehend auf spezialisi- te Teildisziplinen aus der Volks- und Betriebswirtschaft sowie aus der Dritte- Welt-Forschung konzentriert, gelten sie nun auch in vielen breit angelegten so- alwissenschaftlichen Konzepten als zentrale Akteure der Globalisierung (ins- sondere Beck 1997; 2002; aber auch Dicken 1998; Michie 2003; Schirm 2006; Schmidt/Trinczek 1999; Zurn 1998). Multinationale Unternehmen werden als machtvolle Akteure charakterisiert, die die weltweite wirtschaftliche Verflechtung durch ihre internationalen Inves- tionen vorantreiben. Sie kontrollieren einen Grossteil des wachsenden Welth- dels; nach Schatzung der UNCTAD wird ein Drittel des Welthandels untern- mensintern, d.h. zwischen den Gesellschaften ein und desselben Konzerns ab- wickelt. An einem weiteren Drittel sind multinationale Unternehmen als - oder Importeur beteiligt. Durch ihre Fahigkeit, Produktion von einem Land in ein anderes zu ver- gern, verfugen multinationale Unternehmen uber eine Machtressource gegenuber nationalen oder lokal gebundenen sozialen Akteuren. Sie konnen Standorte, die ihnen nicht die gewunschten Produktionsbedingungen bieten, verlassen. Dies hat in Deutschland gewissermassen komplementar zur Diskussion uber Globalis- rung eine heftige Debatte uber die Wettbewerbsfahigkeit des Standorts Deutschland ausgelost (etwa Sachverstandigenrat 1988).
