Seit einigen Jahren wird in Frage gestellt, ob der Begriff "Massenkommunikation" noch eine angemessene Beschreibung für die Vielfalt des Medienangebots ist, vor allem aber, ob damit eine zutreffende Beschreibung der Reichweiten dieser Angebote gegeben wird. Der Band erörtert das Thema am Beispiel des Fernsehens. Die Kernaussage lautet, daß eine Überbetonung der Wahlfreiheit des Publikums die Beschaffenheit des Marktes und der Situation, in der diese Wahl stattfindet, nicht ausreichend beachtet. Auch unter Viel-Kanal-Bedingungen (Kabel- und Satellitenfernsehen, "interaktives" Fernsehen) lassen sich Interessenbegrenzungen beobachten, die gegen eine zielgerichtete Dauerselektion auf seiten des Rezipienten sprechen. Der Zuschauer ist für Vorselektionen und Vorstrukturierungen der Programmanbieter dankbar. Wer von einer "Individualisierung" der Fernsehnutzung spricht, überschätzt die Bedeutung von Unterschieden, die sich leicht herstellen lassen.
