About the Book

Written by leading experts in the field as part of an interdisciplinary pan-European research program funded by the EU, the results provided in this booklet provide a unique and comprehensive overview of how microarray technology can be used in safely tracking the most highly dangerous pathogens. A must-have for public health agencies focused on bioterrorism as well as all laboratories working with BSL3 and/or BSL 4 agents.

Table of Contents:
Preface (Kostic, Butaye, Schrenzel) Introduction on Microarray-based Detection Methods (Schrenzel, Kostic, Bodrossy, Francois) METHODS Long-oligonucleotide Microarray-based Microbial Detection (Kostic, Bodrossy) Sequence-specific End-labelling of Oligonucleotides (SSELO) (Kostic, Bodrossy) Non-cognate Approaches for Pathogen Detection on Microarrays (Schrenzel, Francois, Hernandez, Hibbs, Huyghe, Charbonnier) Patterning Techniques for Array Platforms (Piskin, Garipcan, Demirel, Caglayan) Probe Immobilization Techniques in Array Technologies (Piskin, Caglayan, Duman) IDENTIFICATION Low-Cost-and-Density (LCD)-Microarrays - a Novel Technique for Identification and Typing of Microorganisms (Frangoulidis, Heiser, Landt, Meyer) DNA Microarray Technique for Detection and Identification of Viruses Causing Encephalitis and Hemorrhagic Fever (Nordstroem, Falk, Nilsson, Lundkvist) Microarrays for genomotyping of pathogens (Kieboom, Voskamp, Broekhuijsen) TYPING Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) as Targets for DNA-array Based Identification and Typing of BSL3 Bacteria (Wattiau, Vos, Fretin) Use of a Microchip to Detect Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Bacillus anthracis (Perreten, Frey) QUALITY CONTROL Progress Toward Development of Microarrays for Routine Diagnostic Use for Detection of Select High Risk Pathogens (Kempsell, Shah, Sherwin, Vipond, Silman)

About the Author :
Tania Kostic is a researcher in the Department of Bioresources/Microbiology at the Austrian Research Centers at Seibersdorf working on microbial diagnostic microarrays. Patrick Butaye is a veterinary researcher at the Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Center in Brussels with a focus on antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from animal origin. Jacques Schrenzel is a physician and microbiologist, heading the central bacteriological laboratory of the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève. He is also a consultant for infectious diseases and is in charge of the genome research laboratory.

Review :
"The book reads very well and includes many useful colour schematic diagrams and pictures. I would recommend this book to the researcher who is interested in getting into the microarray field." (Microbiology Today, November 2009)
