About the Book

We are surrounded by polymers: Whether it's to prepare a meal, use computer keyboards and mousepads, or step onto a new playground, you'll encounter a plastic product made of polymers. Owing to the extraordinary range of properties accessible in polymeric materials, they play an essential and ubiquitous role in everyday life - from plastics and elastomers on the one hand to natural biopolymers such as DNA and proteins that are essential for life on the other. This desktop and library reference book provides a comprehensive yet concise overview of the materials, manufacture, structure and architecture, properties, processing, and applications of withing the field of polymers. The book offers a unique mix of theory and application, the essential personal reference for anyone studying or working within the field of polymers.

About the Author :
Leno Mascia was born in Italy where he attended schools up to secondary education and graduated in the U.K. taking a first degree in Chemical Technology and a PhD in PolymerTechnology. He worked as a Research Scientist first at I.C.I. (Plastics Division) and then at Raychem (Corporate Technology), holding alternating posts in academic institutions (Aston University and Loughborough University). He is currently retired but still holds the position of Reader in Polymer Technology in the Department of Materials at Loughborough University and has maintained an active interest in teaching in the Master programs. Until recently he is has acted as Europe?s Editor for Advances in Polymer Technology (Wiley-Interscience) and is the main author of more than 100 publications, 3 textbooks and 12 patents. His main research work is concerned with property enhancement of polymeric materials through morphology control, achieved either by processing routes or by the formation of heterophase structures. He has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Science in recognition for his sustained contribution to scientific research in the field of properties Enhancement of Polymer Materials. Over the last 15 years or so his research work has been directed to specific types of nanocomposites (phase interpenetrating systems), generally known as Organic-Inorganic Hybrids or Ceramers.

Review :
“This book is highly recommended for users to find quickly the desired information in a short overview in a short time.  As a result, scientists will be able to understand the commercial implications of their work, while polymer technologists, engineers, and designers will learn the theoretical background.  In short: the first-stop personal reference for anyone studying or working within the field.”  (Materials and Corrosion, 1 August 2012) “With its 1,500 entries, this desktop and library reference provides a comprehensive yet concise overview of the materials, manufacture, structure and architecture, properties, processing, and applications within the vast field of industrial polymers.”  (The Chemical Engineer, 1 July 2012)
