Karl Johann Philipp Spitta (1801-1859) war einer der bedeutendsten Dichter geistlicher Lieder im 19. Jahrhundert. Er studierte Theologie in Göttingen. Ein Freund veröffentlichte 1833 unter dem Titel "Psalter und Harfe" 66 Lieder die Spitta geschrieben hatte. Diesem Bëchlein und seinem 1843 erschienenen zweiten Teil mit weiteren 40 Liedern war ein unvergleichlicher Erfolg beschieden. Beide Sammlungen werden noch in unseren Tagen nachgedruckt. 1828 wurde Spitta Pastor in Hameln, wo er sich 1836 mit der 17-jährigen Marie Hotzen verlobte. 1996 kamen aus dem Nachlass eines Enkels von Spitta die Briefe ans Licht, die er während der Brautzeit an seine Verlobte geschrieben hat.Aus der sukzessiven Lektëre von Spittas Briefen ist vor allem ein Crescendo der Zuneigung und der Liebe zu seiner zukënftigen Frau zu lesen. Er versteht diese Liebe wie eine göttliche Gabe, die in dem göttlichen Vertrauen verankert ist. Die Briefe sind aber auch ein Zeugnis von Spittas täglichem Leben, denn er schildert viele seiner Erfahrungen als Prediger und Seelsorger. Beindruckend wirken vor allem einige Begebenheiten die er als Gefängnisseelsorger und Garnisonprediger erlebt.Die Briefe sind auch wertvoll, weil in ihnen Sitten, Gewohnheiten und Bräuche des 19. Jahrhunderts zum Ausdruck kommen.Bemerkenswert ist vor allem Spittas Gottesglauben. Ihm lag an einem Glauben, der seinen Ausdruck im Gefëhl und im Herzen fand.Diese Briefe bereichern unsere Kenntnis von Spittas Lebensweg und sind darëber hinaus von hohem lokal- und kulturgeschichtlichem Wert.
