Niemand kann sich einen Baum vorstellen, den sich niemand vorstellt. Wahrnehmbare Dinge existieren dann und nur dann, wenn sie wahrgenommen werden. Sie sind nichts anderes als Bundel wahrnehmbarer Eigenschaften. Wahrnehmbare Eigenschaften sind Vorstellungen. Wie kann jemand, der diese Thesen vertritt, gleichzeitig behaupten, nicht an die Wirklichkeit der Dinge zu ruhren und die vom Wahrnehmenden jeweils unabhangige Existenz und Beschaffenheit des Wahrgenommenen nicht zu leugnen? Wie lassen sich diese und andere Thesen, die Berkeley vertritt, miteinander vereinbaren, und wie glaubt Berkeley, sie begrunden zu konnen? Diese Fragen lassen sich nur dann beantworten, wenn man zwei Behauptungen Berkeleys ernster nimmt als ublich. Erstens: Seine Philosophie beruhe auf der Zuruckweisung der Lehre von den abstrakten Ideen. Zweitens: Sein Ziel sei es, den Skeptizismus zu bekampfen, indem er zeige, dass und wie wir mit Hilfe unserer Sinne Wissen uber die Existenz und Beschaffenheit einer von uns unabhangig existierenden Welt gewinnen. Nimmt man dies ernst, zeigt sich erstens, dass Berkeleys Philosophie entgegen dem ersten Anschein zwar durchaus Mittel bereitstellt, Schein und Sein und bloss Vorgestelltes von Wirklichem zu unterscheiden, dafur aber an anderer und unerwarteter Stelle scheitert: am Leib/Seele-Problem. Zweitens wird klar, wie Berkeley seinen Immaterialismus (es gibt keine Materie) und seinen Idealismus (wahrnehmbare Dinge existieren genau dann, wenn sie wahrgenommen werden) begrundet.
