About the Book

You can find something better than the daily grind almost anywhere! They are living contentedly without a permanent work contract and are realising that old dream of a self-determined life. By means of a new technology they create their own projects, their own logos, and their own spheres of activities. For them, the Internet is not only a tool and a playing field, but also a source of income, a vital artery for life. They are the digital Bohemians, who spread their ideas through the Web to a large public and - in contrast to the Bohemians of the past - finance themselves by doing it. Theirs is a contemporary lifestyle, one that is developing into a significant factor in the economy. It is of course possible to react to the frustrations of the 9 to 5 work life with the "discovery of laziness," as Corinne Maier describes it in her bestseller: "Put in your time, get regular pay." The digital Bohemia represents a courageous alternative. More and more young and creative people are choosing a life of freedom. Their main goal is not necessarily to make money but to have a self-determined lifestyle reflecting their own themes and motivations. It may be that in uncertain times this is a superior strategy. Their close connections with social, artistic, and digital networks are constantly providing new and at times unexpected income opportunities. They display advertising banners on their websites, deal in virtual real estate, find sponsors for projects, sell ideas to corporations. Their products and their workstyles are changing the character of the media and the Internet, and soon will be changing society itself. Authors Holm Friebe and Sascha Lobo outline successful concepts and innovativeapproaches of the digital Bohemia, and describe recent economic, technical and social developments related to it. Their rousing analysis of a future-oriented way of being will become inspiration for how to work the way you want to live. Press "The book We Call It Work by Holm Friebe and Sascha Lobo ... reports on intelligent attempts to live 'beyond permanent full-time jobs'. The impressive stories from the 'digital bohemia' tell of a new kind of work world, one which has to do neither with unemployment payments nor with a steady paycheck, but with reacting self-confidently and creatively to the fact that there are dramatically fewer regular jobs available. The digital bohemians appear much less bewildered and more successful that those who still put their trust in the illusion of regular, full-time jobs." Sddeutsche Zeitung Author HOLM FRIEBE, born in 1972, is an economist and journalist. He worked as a trend researcher and a head writer of a literary program for MTV before co-founding the virtual Universalfirma Zentrale Intelligenz Agentur in Berlin in 2002. His articles appear in many national newspapers and magazines, including a trend column for the Berliner Zeitung. SASCHA LOBO, born in 1975, is a freelance copywriter.
