Der Aufsatzband betrachtet die Geschichte der Transformationen von Nicht-Besitz in Besitz aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Sicht. Die Konflikte um Beutegüter, Jagdrechte oder den Status neueroberter Gebiete zeigen dabei, dass es Transformationen in alle Richtungen gibt, die immer wieder dafür sorgen, dass als Niemandsgüter ausgewiesene Dinge von persönlichem oder staatlichem Eigentum in Allgemeingut oder umgekehrt deklariert werden können. Das schließt auch Räume wie den Unterwasserraum oder den potentiell unendlichen Raum des Weltalls mit ein. Der Band behandelt darüber hinaus aktuelle Konfliktfelder, etwa die Müllentsorgung als Beispiel der Dereliktion oder die massenhafte Entwendung von public properties in Südafrika nach dem Ende der Apartheid. Schließlich lässt sich die Geschichte von Niemandsgütern bis in die jüngste Gegenwart als Konfliktgeschichte beschreiben, die die Frage aufwirft, wem der vermeintliche Nicht-Besitz gehören soll.
