Das 12. Deutsch-Amerikanische Kolloquium, das vom 21. bis 26. Juli 2012 in Chicago stattfand, befasste sich mit der Frage, welche Bedeutung dem Eigentum zukommt, damit die Freiheitsrechte nicht auf dem Papier stehen, sondern die Bürger Wirtschaft, Gesellschaft und Kultur mitgestalten. Im Bewusstsein der Bevölkerung in den USA ist der Zusammenhang zwischen Eigentum und Freiheit und der damit verbundenen Bereitschaft zur Übernahme von Risiken und Verantwortung lebendig. In Deutschland wächst – trotz eines stark ausgebauten Sozialstaats – die Diskussion um Armut und Reichtum. Ursache des Sozialneids in einer Wohlstandsgesellschaft ist die ungleiche Verteilung des Produktivkapitals und die geringe Neigung der Mehrheit der Bevölkerung, die Risiken und die Verantwortung zu tragen, von denen die strukturelle Entwicklung der Industriegesellschaft abhängt.
