Leo von Klenze (1784–1864) gehört neben Karl Friedrich Schinkel zu den herausragenden Architekten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Wie kein anderer hat er als Hofbauintendant von König Max I. Joseph und Ludwig I. sowie als Leiter der Obersten Baubehörde durch spektakuläre Monumentalbauten das Stadtbild des 'Neuen München' und die Baukunst Bayerns geprägt. So populär Klenzes klassizistische Architektur bis heute erscheinen mag: Sie war nicht unumstritten und blieb Einheimischen, Zugereisten und Touristen oft fremd. Der vorliegende Architekturführer schärft das künstlerische Verständnis des Betrachters, indem er die Werke anschaulich charakterisiert und die eigenwillige Baugestalt jeweils aus dem historischen Kontext ihrer Entstehungszeit erläutert. Zentrale Aspekte seiner Architekturtheorie und einige programmatische Gemälde Klenzes vervollständigen die Publikation. Adrian von Buttlar erschließt in einer prägnanten, übersichtlichen Darstellung anlässlich des 150. Todesjahres Klenzes Geschichte und Bedeutung dieses einzigartigen Architekturerbes.
