Der vorliegende Band lädt zu einer interdisziplinären Tour d‘Horizon zum vielgestaltigen Umgang mit dem Tod ein und stellt Forschungsergebnisse aus den Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften, aus Theologie, Philosophie und Geschichte sowie aus der Kunst-, Musik- und Medienwissenschaft in einem weiten Spektrum von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart vor.

Prof. Dr. Karl-Joachim Hölkeskamp ist Professor in der Abteilung für Alte Geschichte am Historischen Institut der Universität zu Köln. Dr. Andreas Michel ist Professor für Biblische Theologie am Institut für Katholische Theologie der Universität zu Köln. Monika Schausten ist Professorin für ältere deutsche Literatur und Sprache an der Universität Siegen. Dr. Arne Karsten ist Wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Seminar für Kunstgeschichte der Humboldt-Universität Berlin. Gudrun Gersmann ist Professorin für Frühe Neuzeit und Direktorin des Deutschen Historischen Instituts in Paris. Prof. Dr. Ute Planert lehrt Neuere Geschichte an der Universität Köln. Dr. Klaus Herbers ist Prof. em. für Mittelalterliche Geschichte und Historische Hilfswissenschaften an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Er ist Experte für die Geschichte Spaniens und des Papsttums im frühen und hohen Mittelalter. Eva-Bettina Krems ist Professorin für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Münster. Tobias Leuker ist Professor für Italienische und Spanische Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität Münster. Prof. Dr. Helmut Neuhaus war von 1989 bis 2009 Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Neuere Geschichte I an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg und von 2006 bis 2018 Sekretär der Historischen Kommission bei der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Norbert Nußbaum lehrt als Professor Architekturgeschichte am Kunsthistorischen Institut der Universität zu Köln.
