Die Fürstendynastie der Ernestiner war im Jahr 1485 aus der Leipziger Teilung des Gesamthauses Wettin hervorgegangen. Seit dieser Zeit besaßen die Ernestiner als Kurfürsten (bis 1547) sowie als Herzöge eine überregionale politische Wirkmacht und kulturelle Anziehungskraft von europäischer Dimension. Zwischen dem Schmalkaldischen Krieg und dem Ende der Fürstenherrschaft im Jahre 1918 regierten die Ernestiner vorrangig im Raum des heutigen Freistaates Thüringen, wobei die Residenzen in Altenburg, Eisenach, Gotha, Hildburghausen, Meiningen und Weimar zu international bedeutenden Zentren höfischer Kunst und Kultur sowie von Pietismus, Aufklärung und Klassik aufstiegen. In dem Band werden diese Themen sowie vielerlei Facetten von Politik, Kultur und gesellschaftlichem Wandel betrachtet, erörtert und diskutiert. Autoren des Buchs sind ausgewiesene Landeshistoriker und Fachwissenschaftler benachbarter Disziplinen, die sowohl in die ernestinischen Territorien als auch hinter die Fassaden der Dynastie schauen.

About the Author :
Dr. Bärbel Raschke ist Germanistin. Sie lehrte und forschte an den Universitäten Leipzig und Bielefeld, Paris, Rabat und Kairo. Doreen von Oertzen Becker studierte Geschichte und Religionswissenschaft an der Universität Leipzig. Von 2013 bis 2016 war sie Stipendiatin im Forschungsprojekt »Thüringen im Jahrhundert der Reformation« an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Stefan Gerber ist Leiter der Forschungsstelle für Neuere Regionalgeschichte Thüringens und Privatdozent am Historischen Institut der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Oliver Heyn wurde mit dieser Arbeit an der Universität Bamberg promoviert. Marko Kreutzmann ist Privatdozent und Leiter der Forschungsstelle für Neuere Regionalgeschichte Thüringens an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Johannes Mötsch war bis zum Eintritt in den Ruhestand 2014 Direktor des Thüringischen Staatsarchivs Meiningen. Hans-Werner Hahn ist emeritierter Professor für Neuere Geschichte an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Werner Greiling ist Professor i.R. für Geschichte der Neuzeit an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena und Vorsitzender der Historischen Kommission für Thüringen. Gerhard Müller ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Ernst-Haeckel-Haus in Jena. Uwe Schirmer ist Inhaber der Professur für Thüringische Landesgeschichte an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena.
