About the Book

This work studies the transformations of the Arthurian legend on German soil from the late medieval period up to the threshold of the Renaissance. The following works are analyzed: Wigamur, the Arthurian trilogy of Der Pleier, Parzival, Der Juengere Titurel, Diu Crone, the Prose Lancelot, the Tristan narratives, and Der Nuewe Parzival.

Table of Contents:
Contents: Male Cinderellas (the later Fair Unknown tradition); the Arthurian trilogy of Der Pleier; Visions of Salvation (Parzival, Juengerer Titurel, Diu Croene); Tristan, Lancelot and the Grail, Der Nuewe Parzifal.

About the Author :
The author: Neil Thomas is a lecturer in German in the University of Durham (England). His previous books have been A German View of Camelot (1987); The Medieval German Arthuriad (1989); Tristan in the Underworld (1991). He is preparing further volumes on the German heroic epic, on Wolfram von Eschenbach and on the French verse romances after Chretien de Troyes and editing for publication a series of papers on Celtic and Germanic Themes in European Literature and on Myth and its Legacy in European Literature.

Review :
Thomas is excellent at assimilating and presenting a digest of the main trends in research while also throwing new light on texts by focusing on a few telling aspects of the works. In 'The Defence of Camelot' he has succeeded in providing a clear overview and a distinct profile of a period which tends to be neglected. (Elizabeth Andersen, Durham University Journal)
