Voici une série d'études qui entend commencer de refléter à sa manière, sans aucune prétention à l'exhaustivité, loin de là, l'affolante diversité des parutions contemporaines, en particulier dans le domaine romanesque. Le critique s'interroge d'abord sur le pourquoi du succès considérable des romans historiques de Jeanne Bourin. Le questionnement concerne ensuite les intentions qui animent Julien Green dans sa pièce L'Automate. Puis, il s'agit, à partir de Quartier perdu, d'établir quelques-unes des constantes de la dérobade sur lesquelles s'appuie l'oeuvre de Patrick Modiano. Lorsque le regard portera sur Yves Navarre, c'est pour tenter de réfléchir avant tout sur l'oeuvre capitale, la véritable somme que représente un roman aussi piranésien que Premières Pages. La cinquième étude est consacrée à Françoise Sagan et en particulier à la tentative insolite que constitue un roman tel qu'Un Orage immobile. Le point commun à ces cinq auteurs, pourtant si différents les uns des autres? Ils sont tous ce qu'on nomme des auteurs à grand, voire très grand succès. Mais on verra peut-être aussi qu'étudiées de près, à travers les intentions décelables du texte, les oeuvres de ces écrivains manifestent de manière souvent inattendue la vitalité et la diversité réjouissantes de la littérature française de cette fin de XXe siècle.
