Die Uraufführungen von Schönbergs 1. und 2. Streichquartett und der Kammersymphonie op. 9 markieren einen Wendepunkt in der Entwicklung der musikalischen Moderne. Die Konzerte erregten 1907 und 1908 im Wiener Publikum enorme Skandale. Die rund 140 hier gesammelten Reaktionen auf diese Veranstaltungen eröffnen einen Ausblick auf die keineswegs nur konservative Ausrichtung der Musikkritik und auf den ästhetischen Paradigmenwechsel, durch den Schönberg das Publikum mehr irritierte als durch technische Innovation. Eine innere, unbewusst wahrnehmbare Ordnung macht äußere Ordnung überflüssig. Das Gedächtnis des Hörenden ist nicht länger wichtigster Adressat der Musik; die Formteile werden isoliert und schließen sich nicht notwendig mehr zu einem nachvollziehbaren Verlauf zusammen. Eine ausführliche Einleitung zur Dokumentation widmet sich dem Skandal als Phänomen moderner Öffentlichkeit, dem Hergang der Ereignisse, der Wiener Kritikerszene, Schönbergs Traditionsverbundenheit in technischer Hinsicht sowie den Auswirkungen seiner neuen Ästhetik auf die Gestaltung der aufgeführten Werke.

About the Author :
Martin Eybl ist Professor fÃ"r Musikgeschichte an der Universität fÃ"r Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. Schwerpunkte seiner Forschungen liegen in den Bereichen Ãsthetik und Musiktheorie des frÃ"hen 20. Jahrhunderts, österreichische Musik des 18. Jahrhunderts sowie Editionen Alter Musik. Zu seinen Publikationen zählen Ideologie und Methode. Zum ideengeschichtlichen Kontext von Schenkers Musiktheorie (1995), Die Befreiung des Augenblicks. Schönbergs Skandalkonzerte von 1907 und 1908. Eine Dokumentation (2004), Schenker-Traditionen. Eine Wiener Schule der Musiktheorie und ihre internationale Verbreitung (2006), Werkausgaben von Pieter Maessins (1995) und Johann Joseph Fux (2000) sowie Aufsätze zur Wiener Musikgeschichte 1740 bis 1800.
