Wie ist es den Kriegsgefangenen des Ersten Weltkriegs im Habsburgerreich tatsächlich ergangen? Wie wurde und wird das Schicksal der Gefangenen in der Geschichtsschreibung beleuchtet? Der Band bündelt hierzu neue Forschungsergebnisse und setzte sich mit zentralen Fragen zur Thematik auseinander. Das Schicksal der Soldaten, die im Zuge des Ersten Weltkriegs von der k.u.k. Armee gefangengenommen wurden, spiegelt die Dramatik der letzten Lebensjahre des Habsburgerreichs auf vielfältige Art und Weise wider. Unterschiedliche Zuständigkeiten im Kriegsgefangenenwesen der Donaumonarchie führten zu einem Ringen um die Einhaltung völkerrechtlicher Verpflichtungen gegenüber den Feindsoldaten ebenso wie zu deren gnadenloser Ausbeutung. Zehntausende starben, Hunderttausende waren bis Kriegsende Teil eines verästelten Systems organisierter Zwangsarbeit. Bis heute wird das Los der Gefangenen in ihren Herkunftsländern oft wenig beachtet oder in nationale Narrative vom Ersten Weltkrieg eingepasst. Der Band beschäftigt sich mit den jeweiligen länderspezifischen Historiographien und untersucht darüber hinaus die Frage, welchen Prioritäten das Habsburgerreich in der Kriegsgefangenenbehandlung folgte. Aktuelle Untersuchungen verbinden sich vor diesem Hintergrund mit einer Neupositionierung der Thematik in der internationalen Kriegsgefangenenforschung.

About the Author :
Verena Moritz, geboren 1969, studierte Geschichte und Russisch in Wien. Sie ist Lektorin am Institut für Geschichte der Universität Wien, Mitarbeiterin an wissenschaftlichen Forschungsprojekten zur österreichischen und russischen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts, zum Ersten Weltkrieg sowie zu filmhistorischen Themen. Seit 2009 Mitglied der österreichisch-russischen Historikerkommission. Zahlreiche Auszeichnungen. Julia Walleczek-Fritz, Mag. Dr. phil., geb. 1982 in Salzburg Stadt, Historikerin und Ausstellungskuratorin, Mitglied des Forum: Österreich-Ungarn im Ersten Weltkrieg. Forschungsschwerpunkte: Erster Weltkrieg (Südwestfront, Kriegsgefangenenproblematik, internationale Fürsorgetätigkeit, Arbeitszwang von Kriegsgefangenen, Militär-zivile Wechselwirkungen), religiöse Minderheiten, Oberösterreich 1918-1938, Tiroler Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte, NS-Euthanasie-Forschung, Migration im 19. Jahrhundert. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Barbara Stelzl-Marx ist Professorin für europäische Zeitgeschichte an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Leiterin des Ludwig Boltzmann Instituts für Kriegsfolgenforschung, Graz – Wien – Raabs.
