Was bedeutet göttliche Vergeltung, und wie funktioniert sie in den Schriften des Neuen Testaments? Diese zentrale Frage behandelt Arjan van den Os in der ersten umfassenden Monographie zu diesem Thema. Er analysiert einschlägige neutestamentliche Texte und entwirft eine Theologie der göttlichen Vergeltung in all ihren Varianten und Verwendungen. Dabei zieht er griechisch-römische, alttestamentliche und frühjüdische Literatur heran, in denen Vergeltung typischerweise als emotionale Reaktion auf die Zurückweisung von Ehre, Reinheit oder einer Gabe (χάρις) erscheint und innerhalb des οἶκος vollzogen wird. Das Alte Testament fügt die Aspekte des göttlichen Vorrechts und des Bundes hinzu, während frühjüdische Texte Vergeltung häufig eschatologisch darstellen. Vor diesem Hintergrund definiert der Autor göttliche Vergeltung im Neuen Testament als retributive, eschatologische, rechtliche, bundestheologische und teilweise emotionale Reaktion Gottes gegen diejenigen, die ihm oder seinem Volk Schaden zufügen - mit dem Ziel, Ehre, Reinheit und Gerechtigkeit wiederherzustellen. Sie dient dazu, die Leser zur Beharrlichkeit im Glauben zu ermahnen und bedrängte Christusgemeinschaften zu trösten. Zudem geht Arjan van den Os auf die hermeneutischen Schwierigkeiten ein, vor denen moderne Leser stehen, und zeigt, wie gegenwärtige Vorstellungen von Vergeltung - oft als illegitime Selbstjustiz betrachtet - durch historische Entwicklungen wie Machtzentralisierung, Säkularisierung und die Herausbildung von Menschenrechten geprägt wurden.
