In dieser Studie untersucht Stephen Germany die literarische Funktion der Philister und Aramäer in den Büchern Samuel und Könige. Er analysiert zudem die Entstehungsgeschichte und den historischen Hintergrund der Erzählungen, in denen sie vorkommen. Beide Völker treten als archetypische Angreifer gegen Israel und Juda auf. So entsteht das Bild einer Königszeit, die von ständigen äußeren Bedrohungen geprägt war. Auf historischer Ebene spiegelt dieses Bild die kulturelle Erinnerung an die assyrische Eroberung des Nordreichs Israel im Jahr 722 v. Chr. wider. Die Darstellung deutet frühere Niederlagen gegen Philister und Aramäer als Vorzeichen dieses Umbruchs - als typologische Vorwegnahme des späteren Untergangs von Israel und Juda.
