Die Gelehrtenbriefe führen direkt in die Werkstatt des Wissens. Sie bilden nach den Reisebriefen den zweiten Band der Ausgewählten Briefe Max Webers. Der Band enthält über hundert Briefe und Karten, beruhend auf der Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe. Die ausgewählten Dokumente zeugen von der reichen Briefkultur des Bildungsbürgertums im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert. Max Webers stilsichere Briefsprache kannte alle Schattierungen: Trost, Mitgefühl, Leidenschaft, Belehrung, Streitlust, Rechthaberei. Der Band unterscheidet die drei Felder, Lebensführung, Politik und Wissenschaft, auf denen uns der Gelehrte Max Weber begegnet. "Lebensführung" umfasst die persönliche Haltung in zentralen Fragen zu Familie, Ehe, Erotik, Kunst, Musik und Religion, "Politik" die ständige, von klein auf erlernte Bereitschaft, sich mit politischen und brisanten Zeitfragen kritisch und teilnehmend auseinander zu setzen, und schließlich das Kerngebiet des Gelehrten, die "Wissenschaft", die Weber mit Unnachgiebigkeit und Strenge als unabhängige Sphäre verteidigte. Positionen und Zusammenhänge, die sich sonst nur schwer erschließen lassen, werden in der lebhaften Auseinandersetzung mit einem Briefpartner oft klarer und direkter formuliert. Die Briefe geben Einblick in Gelehrtenmilieus mit ihrer jeweiligen intellektuellen Ausstrahlung, ihren akademischen Geselligkeitsformen und kulturellen Mustern von Zugehörigkeit und Ausgrenzung. Eingeleitet wird die Auswahl durch einen Essay von Gangolf Hübinger (Frankfurt/Oder). Ein biografisches Personenregister erschließt die Briefe, die gegenüber der Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe vereinfacht zum Abdruck gelangen.
