Timo Luks geht von der Beobachtung aus, dass die aktuelle Wiederbelebung von Kapitalismustheorie und Kapitalismuskritik mit einem neuen Interesse an nicht-westlichen Wirtschaftsweisen einhergeht. Konzepte, die seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert in der Ethnologie entwickelt wurden, um "primitive Wirtschaften" zu beschreiben, entfalten gegenwärtig wieder erhebliche Attraktivität. Praktiken der Gabe und Gegenseitigkeit in vorkapitalistischen Gesellschaften, der Kula-Ringtausch in der Inselwelt des Westpazifik, das verschwenderische Rivalitätsspiel des Potlatch in Nordwestamerika - diese und andere Konzepte dienen als Bezugspunkte einer Suche nach ökonomischen Alternativen. Der Autor rekonstruiert die Geschichte der Beschäftigung mit außereuropäischen Wirtschaftsweisen. Er zeigt auf, dass die Begegnung von Ökonomie und Ethnologie seit Marx eine Wahrnehmungsweise hervorbrachte, in der die Ökonomie der Anderen und der moderne Kapitalismus spiegelbildlich aufeinander bezogen waren. Der ökonomisch-ethnologische Diskurs kreiste um eine Prüfung zentraler Begriffe, die das Nachdenken über Wirtschaft in westlichen Gesellschaften prägen (Akkumulation, Geld, Gewinnstreben, Kapital, Konkurrenz, Markt, Preis, Profit, Tausch, Unternehmergeist, Ware). Aus wissensgeschichtlicher Perspektive lässt sich die Frage beantworten, wie eine Beschäftigung mit fernen Gesellschaften Papua-Neuguineas, Afrikas oder Amazoniens zum Schlüssel für das Verständnis "unserer" Wirtschaftsweise werden konnte.
