Cotton Mathers Kommentare zu Sprüche, Prediger Salomo, Hohelied, Jesaja und Jeremia sind eine reichhaltige Quelle zur Geschichte der Entwicklung der Reformierten Theologie und der Bibelinterpretation in der Frühaufklärung. Mather befasst sich mit Übersetzungsproblemen sowie mit Fragen der Autorschaft, der Entstehung und des Genres der Texte. Best known for his Magnalia Christi Americana (1702), he published more than 400 works in various fields including church history, natural theology, and medicine.
