Die Transformation des Kirchenbegriffs in der Frühaufklärung vollzog sich in Form einer doppelten Horizontüberschreitung zum einen über die Grenzen der Theologie hinaus und zum anderen innerhalb dieser. Die Öffnung der ekklesiologischen Debatte außerhalb der Theologie führte zur Ethisierung und Universalisierung des Kirchenbegriffs verbunden mit dem Aufkommen einer Kultur der religiösen Mündigkeit des Laien. Auf der Suche nach einem allgemeineren Begründungszusammenhang als es spezielle offenbarungstheologische Rechtfertigungen boten, rückte der Kirchenbegriff in den Fokus von Naturrecht und Religionstheorie. Durch den Paradigmenwechsel vom Staats- zum Vereinsgedanken erfolgte die rechtliche Einordnung religiöser Institutionen in die Gesellschaft. Die Etablierung des Territorial- und Kollegialsystem brachte die vorläufige Klärung und Regelung des Verhältnisses von Kirche und Staat. In Reaktion auf die Transformation des Kirchenbegriffs außerhalb der Theologie kam es erst relativ spät zur Transformation innerhalb dieser. Die Folge war eine Erweiterung des dogmatischen Kirchenbegriffs und die Thematisierung der Ekklesiologie außerhalb der Dogmatik. Diese doppelte Horizontüberschreitung hat sich in der Frühaufklärung durchgesetzt, was verständlich macht, warum die Neologie keine größeren Anstrengungen mehr auf dem Gebiet eines verengten Kirchenbegriffs unternahm, sondern dazu überging, die Sozialformen der abendländischen Religion im Rahmen einer Christentumstheorie zu verhandeln.
